The Dolphins in the Pod

These are common dolphins, spotted on the whale watching trip I undertook with CRESLI. It was my first time seriously trying to shoot dolphins, and boy, was it hard! Just when you think you’ve got ’em in focus, they slip beneath the waves and surface somewhere else.

The Owl and His Dinner

I admit it. I’m in love with this picture. It was a complete accident — I was not paying attention to the background, nor really to the way the light falls off around the owl’s body. I was simply trying to get a good focus on his (her?) eye through the cage while he (she?) was still hopping around, as this great horned owl is usually found (on the occasions I visit, anyway) up in one of the nesting boxes in the tree, and is not usually visible.

Well, not only was this owl visible, he was hopping around like mad. Something had him riled up. I don’t think he was getting stressed about people being around (this particular trip to the Quogue Wildlife was a little more crowded than when I usually go, it being Tuesday and the Nature Center being open), but I can’t know for sure.

The Glare of the Seagull

with 2 comments

A recent trip to Cranberry Bog (“the duck pond”) earned me only the chance to be swarmed by seagulls — probably at least 15-20 of them, all hungry and aggressive. During the summer, these guys are not there (mostly they’re at the beaches at that point, as beachgoers don’t usually know any better and either give or let the seagulls snatch their french fries). I was hoping to see more hooded megansers, which I have seen there (too far away to photograph well), or at the very least the swans who’ve taken over the pond as their very own (more on this later). No such luck. Only the glare of the seagulls when they realized I hadn’t any bread.
