The Giant Ducks of Kaler’s Pond

leave a comment »

Across the highway from the Terrell River County Park, there is Kaler’s Pond (AKA Mill Pond), a beautiful little park in its own right. (It’s host to a playground and the Audubon Center.)

These giants of ducks were spotted along the shore, sitting amidst seagulls and Canada geese. I suspect they are hybrids of two different species, as they were the size of the geese, but (mostly) the coloring of mallards (there were others not pictured here).

The Bird of Prey

with one comment

Anybody who’s been reading this blog for a while knows how much I love the duck pond, and how when the weather warms up I spend hours sitting and watching the local wildlife. I was doing just this after riding my bike for the first time in months when I suddenly saw a large, dark bird spiral down and hit the water near a group of ring-necked ducks. I wish I had been ready for it.

I managed to get my camera up in time to snap a few blurry, out of focus shots of it flying back to its perch with its meal. I’m almost 99% sure it’s an osprey, despite the fact that I’ve never seen one hunt there before. A link to the original size if you’d like to see more upclose and personal and tell me what you think.
