The Wood Duck in the Aviary

leave a comment »

I took a staycation this March in an attempt to save up money for my November vacation (when I hope to go to the Festival of the Cranes). But dang, it’s hard to think of things to do when most things around town are closed til April at the earliest! Even looking to the rest of Long Island, there wasn’t much exciting going on. So I made the trip out to an old favorite, the Bronx Zoo.

This guy can be found in one of the aviaries. Yep, you can find his fellows on Long Island, but I haven’t spotted one in a while. So it was a treat to see him at the BZ.

The Cormorant at the Pond

leave a comment »

Spotted this fellow swimming in the duck pond when I went to go look for osprey. Cormorants are a pretty common sight around here in the summer. (Unfortunately for the species, they are becoming too common in general, and many states, New York included, have programs in place to help control the populations in order to prevent conflict with other bird populations and recreational fisheries. For more information, go straight to the horse’s mouth at the Department of Environmental Conservation.)

Vacations Past: The Drake in the Grass

with one comment

This guy was just a very stereotypical California dude — laid back, just kind of hanging out, working his tan in the sun.
