The Deer in the Driveway

with one comment

A deer darted out at one of the wider spots on Dune Road and crossed there — despite my car in one lane and a truck approaching in another. All of us were very lucky that the deer was very fast and had pretty good timing: in her dash across the road, all her limbs elongated beautifully to carry her across to the reeds, and she was not hit.

Of course, where there’s one deer, there’s likely more, and so, pulling over, I began to look over at where she had come from. Lo and behold, her family was standing there in someone’s driveway, staring back at me. They then turned and began to head towards the house and the ocean, leaving their brave family member on the bay side, where she had disappeared into the reeds.
