Vacations Past: The Drake in the Grass

This guy was just a very stereotypical California dude — laid back, just kind of hanging out, working his tan in the sun.

The Cluster of Ducks

A recent trip to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge yielded a pond full of new (to me) ducks — a few different species that regularly make Long Island their home, but that somehow I had never seen before. Maybe I was just not looking hard enough.

By far, my favorite was the Wood Duck, whose stripes and iridescence are incredible. Look at the drake next to him, guarding his girl jealously, all the while knowing that his own head will never have quite the same sheen. Don’t worry, drake. If Wikipedia is right, the wood duck is only passing through.
