Look very closely at this dragonfly. Look at it. I can’t tell what it is doing — is this what it looks like when a dragonfly urinates? Or is it doing something that I am unaware dragonflies even do?

At least I think it’s a wasp. This was a very large insect, one that in some ways reminded me of wasps and in other ways reminded me of dragonflies or even butterflies. If anyone has any clues… ?

The Acrobatic Seaside Dragonlet

I spotted this little lady down by the osprey pole on Beach Lane, hovering among the wildflowers. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to successfully identify the species, as there are almost a hundred different species of dragonfly on Long Island. (Or, as my parents call them, “dining needles”.)
