The Mole Above Ground

I was outside with the dogs, photographing mushrooms while they ran around, when the little one picked something up gingerly. I watched him for a few seconds as he put it down and picked it up again just as gently, trying to figure out what he had. From a distance, it looked like a large but short stick. However, the instant I realized it was an animal, and a dead one at that, I scared him off it and put him back inside. Then I did what anyone would have done — photographed the corpse.

I couldn’t tell what it had perished of — it looked largely intact, and there was only a solitary fly buzzing around.

At least, I’m pretty sure it was dead and not playing possum.
