The Black Crowned Night Heron

Last summer, I lamented on the fact that my mother had spotted night herons and I had not. I kept my eyes peeled everywhere I went. I actively sought to find them. But alas, it was not meant to be.

This summer, I have had great luck in spotting them. Either they are in greater abundance this year or I am just better than I was last year at seeking them.

A few nights ago a friend and I went wandering down to the Beach Lane bridge. No wildlife expected; this was purely a walk for social and entertainment purposes. However, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a night heron fishing by the rocks. Although it was dark and I did not have the benefit of my long lens to spy on it, I’m fairly certain it was a black crowned night heron, like this one fishing in one of the pools off Dune Road back in June.
